Third Time Lucky For Hawkesbury Trainer?
Will it be third time lucky for Hawkesbury trainer Nick Mitchell in the Provincial Champions Final at Randwick on April 8.
The popular Provincial Championships is now in its third year and Mitchell has qualified a finalist on each occasion.
It is a tremendous achievement for a trainer who does not possess as big a team as many other provincial trainers.
Dream Lane’s first-up third to Kembla Grange-trained Pomelo in the Gosford Qualifier that was transferred to Rosehill last Saturday has given Mitchell another shot at the $400,000 final over 1400m.
Understandably he is really looking forward to it.
“I’ve got no doubt there is improvement in the mare,” Mitchell said. “She hadn’t trialled but they let me gallop Dream Lane with a mate on the grass at Rosehill recently.
“She has pulled up well and won’t race again before the April 8 final but I might take her back to town and trial her at Randwick on March 31 to keep her up to the mark.”
Mitchell is confident Dream Lane will be very competitive in the final.
“She has come back a stronger mare and at this stage I don’t think the field will be as strong as last year. There’s no Danish Twist there this time.”
Mitchell also has Belridge in Thursday’s $150,000 Kembla Qualifier (1400m), but doubts he will make the field as he is well down the order with his Benchmark rating.
Hawkesbury now has three Provincial finalists after Shazee-Lee (first) and Reiby Rampart (third) qualified at home on March 2.
