2017 NEVILLE SELLWOOD STAKES HANDICAP - RACE HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The Neville Sellwood Stakes is a Group 3 race conducted by the Australian Turf Club at Rosehill Gardens.

The Neville Sellwood Stakes was first run in 1980 and is named in honour of the champion Australian jockey Neville Sellwood who died after a race fall in France in 1962.

The Neville Sellwood Stakes is for horses of both sexes aged four and above and is run under set weight conditions with penalties.

The Neville Sellwood Stakes has been run over 2000 metres at Rosehill since its inception with the exception of 2010 when it was held at Canterbury over 1900 metres.

In 2011 The Neville Sellwood Stakes was run as the Queen’s Cup.

The Neville Selwood Stakes was a Listed race from 1989 until 2010. Since 2011 it has been Group 3.

Notable winners of the Neville Sellwood Stakes include Iko, Look Aloft, Round The World, Native Neptune, Protara’s Bay, Inaflury, Shower Of Roses, Lights Of Heaven, Junoob and Pornichet.

The 2016 Neville Sellwood Stakes was won by It's Somewhat from Messene with Sir John Hawkwood third.
